Savannah Centre, Mercy Corps Hold Policy Dialogue on Conflict Sensitive Reportage

    The Savannah Centre for Diplomacy Democracy and Development (SCDDD) in collaboration with the House of Representatives Committee on Media and Public Affairs has held a policy dialogue engagement if conflict sensitive reportage between policy makers and media practitioners.

    The policy dialogue focused on how the media must be sensitive in its reportage of conflict and the role of media regulators to ensure compliance.

    While giving his opening remark at the event, Mal. Sani Bala, the Executive Director of Savannah Centre explained that the organization ‘s work centres around the conflict resolution, do no harm and peaceful coexistence.

    He mentioned that the media has a role to ensure that the truth is disseminated to the media while making sure that the truth that is being told does not disintegrate the society.
    He charged participants to ensure that they prevent anything that would instigate conflicts but to take responsibility for mitigating crisis.

    On his part, Mr. Ndubusi Anyawu, Country director, Mercy Corps Nigeria mentioned that “we must pay attention and ensure we communicate what is right and what is not.”
    He urged journalists to stay focused to the tenets of the profession and avoid instigating violence or conflicts through their reportage.

    David Gatare, Chief of Party, Community Initiatives to Promote Peace, Mercy Corps, also spoke on the need for the media to report early warning, which according to him would help to address any form of conflict that may arise.
